THE TEAM What happens when you put two Chinese speaking environmental designers (Haidy and Dee) together with an English speaking photographer (Miranda) and throw them into a GERMAN speaking city? You get a super group of miscommunications that lead to an amazing end product. WORK DIVISION All of us worked together on research, ideation, and programming. After we established building program, circulation, look and feel, we then divided works between us. I am in charge of designing the lobby and all the guest rooms. Dee is in charge of designing the gallery, restaurant, and cafe. Miranda is in charge of finding visual images, photo taking, and presentation making. All of us had a great chemistry, and collaborated perfectly.

THE PROJECT Reimagine hospitality. Think of a way to design a hospitality experience for creatives. For those who criticize over design. How do we introduce a hospitality experience for “tourists” while preserving Berlin’s unique embrace of its small creative industries that gives creatives a place to “live to work, not work to live.”

FLOOR PLAN

We designed top two floors, which includes the inspirational gallery, communicative cafe, restaurant, and bar, collaborative studios. They are interlocking volumes, all connected by u: lobby, where you arrive to check in. u: is made up of small, medium, and large studios, there are places to eat and drink, and to absorb information. The floor plan is inspired by how creatives are coming together and collaborated on projects which creates a shift in perspective.

AXONOMETRIC

MATERIAL PALETTE We are keeping parts of the building raw, because creatives like to start from the ground up. The new materials we are incorporating are cortan steel; steel frame that sets up a grid system for creatives to hang up their works; stained plywood to use the colors to differentiate programs; and digital screen to embrace creatives from digital to tangible.
